Simple salt therapy could prove a simple and effective treatment for cystic fibrosis.
Those with the condition lack a crucial enzyme that normally keeps the lungs and airways clear. They suffer chronic lung damage because of the build up of excessive amounts of mucus ultimately leading to respiratory failure.
Work now being done in the US and Australia was first triggered by the discovery that people with Cystic Fibrosis who were surfers had fewer lung infections.
Researchers believe that it is the sea salt spray that helps clear their lungs by thinning and breaking up mucus deep in the lungs making it easier to displace, cough up and clear.
